The Beginning

Groveport, Ohio was incorporated as a village in 1847 located along the Ohio-Erie Canal. Lutherans from Groveport drove their wagons to Obetz Zion Lutheran Church in Obetz for church services.  In 1911 the Groveport Lutherans started meeting in each other’s homes rather than making the trip to Obetz. As the group grew in size they began meeting in the Town Hall on alternate Sunday afternoons. Due to all materials having to be collected, packed and sorted after each service, the services moved to the second floor of the Biglow Hall on Main Street. The Pastor from Zion Lutheran Church of Obetz, Rev. Joseph Sittler, began leading service after the move to the Bigelow House. The Groveport Congregation became a mission congregation to the Obetz Zion Lutheran Church until 1914.

Main Street

On August 20, 1914 Groveport Zion Lutheran Church was officially organized as an independent congregation with fifty-four charter members signing the first constitution. Pastor Rhiel was called to serve the new Congregation along with Marcy and Lithopolis Lutherans.

In 1916 the Congregation voted to by a lot on Main Street in Groveport to build a church. The foundation was started in the Spring of 1916 and the Cornerstone was laid on Oct. 15, 1916.This allowed Groveport to enjoy alternate morning services until 1936. Easter Morning 1936 marked the beginning of services every Sunday Morning. A mere 20 years after being formed. In 1953, Pastor Herbener became the first full-time pastor of Groveport Zion Lutheran Church.

Groveport Road - Current Location

Pastor Troutman was installed as the Pastor for Groveport Zion in 1954. The Congregation grew rapidly. The decision was made that the current Main Street location did not provide the land needed to accommodate the growing church. Members of the church, Fred and Anna Kiechle, offered land to the congregation at a very fair price and six acres were purchased west of town.

The congregation continued to grow and in the fall of 1965, the congregation was faced with adding on to the existing church or building a new building on the six acres west of town. The congregation embarked on the “Growing Corn for a Growing Church” era of the congregation. Corn was grown on the land to help fund the church. Fifty years after our start, growth is such to plan the building of a new church. Construction of the educational unit took one year while the sanctuary took another five years to complete in 1971.

We have been blessed with many pastors in our history.  Our current (interim) pastor is the Rev. Brian S. McGee.

Our mission is to make a positive impact on our community through the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. We do this through our Sunday morning services, small groups and many ministries.
