A Message from the Interim Pastor
It’s coming soon! No, not Christmas; it’s almost eleven months away. It’s not “tax day,” that’s almost three months away. Then again, maybe it’s not too early to think about either one of those days. Still, my attention is on Lent which is just a couple weeks away.
Lent is a time of prayer, repentance, sacrifice, and good works. It has been an observance of the Christian Church since at least the second century. Originally, it was primarily a time for converts to prepare for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. Following that service, they would break the Lenten fast (and you wondered where the word “breakfast” came from) before returning to worship and receive Holy Communion.
Zion’s Lent and Holy Week will take on a bit of a new flavor this year. I’m not blessed with the voice of Pastor Rob so our worship will be a more traditional service of prayer, Scripture, hymn, and meditation. The meditations will be first person monologues portraying Caiaphus, Pilate, Peter, and Dismas (the good thief). March 24 will be the highlight when Pastor Match and several men from the Obetz Methodist Church will dramatically introduce us to four of the disciples.
We are also in the process of arranging for youth from Circleville Trinity to present a mime for us on the first Sunday in Lent, February 21. It concerns temptation and will serve as an introduction to the sermon on Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. This mime is a powerful message for the young of all ages. Another sermonic approach will be used on March 14 when I will adapt a Phillip Gulley story into a sermon.
I look forward to our walking the Lenten journey together!
Serving Him forever, and Zion for a time,
Pastor Don Bachman
Interim Pastor
